This is perhaps the easiest piece of preparation for worship - at least as far as the volunteers who take part in the rota are concerned. I know the Church Officer ensures that the batteries are already charged up before we arrive and he usually has them in the mics and all ready for operation.
On a "normal" Sunday all that is required is to operate the "sliders" for the mics. The one at the lectern can be left on all the time but the minister's one needs "slid" up or down depending on whether he is to be heard or whether he would prefer not to be (like during hymns or when someone else is speaking).
Our sound system is a great help to most of us in a large Church but a boon for those who wear hearing aids as it allows them to hear better what is being said. At least it does if the microphones are in the right place for the speaker. One of our frustrations at the sound desk is that there is a limit to what we can do with "levels". If the reader (particularly at the lectern mic) does not adjust the height and distance there is little we can do.
There is a group of about eight of us take it in turns just now but more help is always welcome. Training can be given by any of us (just come and sit beside us at the desk at the back of the Church) - it is not nearly as scary as the equipment looks. Or contact Ann Holland 634801.
